Life at a California Vietnamese refugee camp at the close of the Vietnam War is depicted through the eyes of a man who is desperately seeking his sister so he may reunite her with her two children. A balanced portrayal of both US and Vietnamese characters, this often-subtitled film offers a unique view of the infamous conflict, although it contains a few content concerns (see list below).
Violence: B-
A man suddenly awakens after hearing bombs exploding in his dream. A frustrated woman hits a man. A man explains that his father burning him with a cigar caused the scars on his hand. An upset woman rips her clothes. A man accuses another of treason. A man awakens when he dreams of gunfire. Characters discover a grief-stricken man has committed suicide - we see a shot of his arms with blood around his wrists. A woman hits a man.
Sexual
Content: C
A man sneaks out at night to meet with a woman - sex is implied. A magazine shows a woman in a bikini. A man and woman argue over his decision to marry a second wife - both women are pregnant. A man lies naked on a shower floor - seen from behind. A married man and woman appear engaged in sexual activity, although we only see a brief close-up of their faces.
Language: C
In English subtitles (while spoken in Vietnamese): One sexual expletive, one moderate profanity, and two mild profanities.
